Detailed Movie Review: Animal (2023) Bollywood | Hindi

In “Animal,” the mantra “blood is thicker than water” reigns supreme, glorifying familial bonds even amidst their twisted complexities. Clocking in at an exhaustive 3 hours and 21 minutes, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga embarks on a testosterone-fuelled odyssey reminiscent of “The Godfather,” yet marred by glaring misogyny and unchecked machismo.

When Vijay’s father falls victim to an assassination attempt, he assumes the mantle of the family patriarch. He vows to safeguard their steel empire while exacting ruthless vengeance. Despite his volatile temperament and unresolved daddy issues, Vijay’s love life simmers with toxic masculinity. He ensnares Geetanjali with predatory charm and unsettling humour.

Vanga’s narrative dances precariously between fascination and disgust as he exalts Vijay’s defiance of societal norms while skirting the edges of moral ambiguity. Yet, beneath the veneer of swagger and bravado lies a glaring absence of purpose, rendering Vijay a rebel without a cause.

While the action sequences pulse with adrenaline and the performances, notably Ranbir Kapoor’s, crackle with intensity, the film flounders in its shallow characterizations and lack of thematic depth. Despite their talents, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol languish as mere spectators in Vijay’s tumultuous world, while female characters are relegated to submissive stereotypes.

“Animal” leans heavily on Kapoor’s magnetic presence, his seething intensity captivating audiences even amidst the chaos. Yet, his virtuosic performance is shackled by a script that fails to match his prowess, leaving “Animal” a cacophony of style over substance.

Conversely, while Kapoor’s portrayal of Vijay is captivating, “Animal” ultimately falls short of its potential. It is a missed prospect to investigate deeper into the complexities of family dynamics and human nature. As the credits roll, one can’t help but wonder if there was a quieter, more profound story waiting to be told amidst the bloodshed and bravado.
